Do you qualify for an HST Substantial Renovation Rebate?
Are you eligible for an HST Renovation Rebate?
To qualify for the HST Rebate, renovations need to be substantial.  This means that they need to be a 90% or greater renovation.  The types of renovations that apply are ones that are complete gut jobs, extensions or additions that double the size of the house and renovations that require constructions right down to the studs.
How much money can I get back?
The maximum renovation rebate is $16,300 on an existing house and the maximum for a new home built on vacant land is $24,000.  To achieve the maximum rebate, you need to have spent approximately $250k or more on the renovation.  Permits, materials, built-in appliances, landscaping and labour are all included.
If I am renovating, what should I know in order to qualify for the rebate?
If you are renovating, hold on to all your receipts from contractors.  Also retain copies of your permits. You will have until 2 years after you move back in (or 2 years after the home is deemed live-able) to file for the HST Rebate.
